usana essentials

Article extracted from USANA Australia Magazine 2015 Volume 4.

Your personal nutrition plan starts with a simple system of supplements –USANA Essentials™.

Together, the Mega Antioxidant and MultiMineral comprise the USANA Essentials for adults, and this duo delivers a broad range of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to support the health of your entire body starting with your cells.

To maintain optimal health, we need a variety of vitamins, minerals, bioflavonoids, and other micronutrients in the correct amounts – at optimal levels which surpass RDIs (recommended
dosages defined by government agencies to avoid deficiency diseases) of those ingredients; in the right balance, and in the proper forms – that are of high quality and highly absorbable by
the body. But obtaining these nutrients solely from diet has become a struggle with today’s hectic lifestyles and nutrient depleted food sources.

USANA understands the importance of providing the right nutrients, in the correct amounts, in the right balance, and in the proper forms for every age group, and has created the Essentials product line. Helping you build a strong foundation for exceptional health, the Essentials
provide a comprehensive spectrum of the necessary vitamins and minerals adults need every day for optimal health and energy levels.

USANA Essentials received the Top 5-Star rating, with Gold Medal of Achievement from NutriSearch Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements Fifth Consumer Edition.
This comprehensive publication shows the results of in-depth comparisons of over 250 Australian and New Zealand supplements. Ratings are awarded according to critical health support criteria for each supplement and in light of the latest global scientific findings.
The Mega Antioxidant is designed to support general health and well-being and to combat the damaging effects of free radicals (potentially damaging, highly reactive molecules) and the MultiMineral is the perfect complement to Mega Antioxidant and provides balanced
amounts of important minerals.

So how do they work?

The Mega Antioxidant is a comprehensive, high-potency formula that includes a broad spectrum of essential vitamins which offers complete antioxidant protection against oxidative
stress. Its’ formula contains critical ingredients including lycopene, turmeric extract, coenzyme Q10, and alpha lipoic acid. When combined with the potent antioxidant mixture already present in Mega Antioxidant the result is complete antioxidant protection.

In addition to comprehensive antioxidant protection, Mega Antioxidant offers nutritional support for healthy circulation and blood vessels, healthy vision and a sound immune system, and protection against environmental toxins which are important for long-term optimal health.

The MultiMineral delivers a comprehensive, high-potency formula that includes a broad spectrum of essential minerals and cofactors that support optimal health and provides
balanced amounts of important minerals to enhance the body’s efficient use of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.

MultiMineral contains a balanced blend of minerals and trace minerals. Many vitamins and enzymes need a mineral cofactor for proper function, however not all mineral forms are created equal. USANA uses minerals in forms that are readily absorbed by the body. USANA has
carefully formulated a balance of essential minerals—in bioavailable forms—and has added trace minerals for balance and completeness. USANA continually strives to use ingredients with proven quality, purity, and bioavailability. Minerals are sourced from the highest quality suppliers and only those that meet USANA’s strict guidelines.

Both the Mega Antioxidant and MultiMineral are vegetarian safe and are laboratory tested, quality guaranteed. They meet the British Pharmacopoeia specifications for potency, uniformity, and disintegration where applicable.

USANA’s Essentials provide the advanced nutritional foundation for every adult, every day, to support lifelong health.

usana essentials benefitsTHE MEGA ANTIOXIDANT is designed to support general health and well-being and to combat the damaging effects of free radicals (potentially damaging, highly reactive molecules). The Mega Antioxidant contains critical ingredients including lycopene, turmeric extract, coenzyme Q10, and alpha lipoic acid and Bioflavonoid Complex as well as Vitamin A, B and E plus Heart of the Olive and USANA’s Poly C™.

THE MULTIMINERAL is the perfect complement to Mega Antioxidant. Minerals and trace
elements represent less than one-half of one percent of the total nutrients we consume every
day, and yet without them, our bodies would be unable to efficiently use the carbohydrates,
proteins, and fats in our diet. The MultiMineral features Zinc, Selenium, Magnesium, Chromium, Iodine, Copper and Manganese.

USANA Essentials – Foundation of Optimal Health

usana essentialsArticle from USANA Asia-Pacific Health News Letter.

Essentially speaking, those who take USANA Essentials as their daily source of multivitamins, multi-minerals and multi-antioxidants are building their health on a bedrock foundation. USANA Essentials provides a broad spectrum of vitamins, minerals, mixed carotenoids, bioflavanoids and other plant nutrients in a complete, balanced, safe and efficacious way. Besides, the high quality ingredients are highly bioavailable, where all nutrients are easily absorbed and utilized by our body cells. If we make it a daily routine to replenish our body cells with the right amount, right form and right balance of nutrients, we will definitely reap the fruition of sound health:

Metabolic Health

As USANA Essentials supplies a broad spectrum of the B complex vitamins, namely thiamin (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), niacin (vitamin B3), pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), pyridoxine (vitamin B6), folate and cobalamin (vitamin B12), to help the body release energy from metabolism of foods – carbohydrate, protein and fat, supporting our metabolic rate as a whole. Vitamins B3, B6, B12, C, E, biotin, coenzyme Q10, as well as the minerals chromium, magnesium, manganese, and zinc are all essential for proper metabolic support and assist with the regulation of glucose metabolism. One study found that subjects who took 3 grams of vitamin B3 daily experienced an average 10% reduction in total blood cholesterol, 26% decrease in triglycerides.

Ocular (Eye) Health

Vitamin A is best known for its effects on the visual system. Poor adaptation to changes in light intensity and poor night vision are indicative of low vitamin A status. However, supplementation of pre-formed vitamin A at taken chronically at very high doses may lead to cumulative toxic overdose . Hence, USANA Essentials supplies a safer form of vitamin A as beta-carotene, once converted into the active form of vitamin A by the body, supports eye health. Beta-carotene also acts as a natural biological solar filter, protecting against light-induced UV damage to the eyes . Moreover, research in general has also found a significantly decreased risk of age-related cataract (33% to 51%) in men and women with vitamin B2 intake between 1.6 to 2.2mg/day . High intake of vitamin B1 has been found to help reduce risk of cataract as well . In another study, high circulating levels of vitamins C, E, and beta-carotene have been shown to help reduce the prevalence of cataract formation. Antioxidant Support Some studies have shown that increased consumption of vitamin B3 (5.2mg – 6.2mg daily), along with antioxidant nutrients are associated with decreased risk of mouth cancer, throat cancer and esophageal cancers. Diminished folate status is found to be associated with cancers of the cervix, colon and rectum, lung, esophagus, brain, pancreas and breast. The dire consequence of low folate intake is further aggravated with high alcohol intake which is associated with increased incidence of colorectal cancer. On the other hand, studies have shown that premenopausal women with genetic background of breast cancer who consumed an average of 205mg vitamin C daily experienced 63% lower risk of breast cancer than those who consumed an average of 70mg/ day. Findings from another study also show that optimal selenium status was associated with a significant 54% lower risk of lung cancer.

The Bottom Line

Broad scientific evidence supports a need to supplement with a variety of nutrients to support metabolic health, and eye health as well as to aid in fighting chronic diseases such as cancer through synergistic antioxidant support. In fact, the American Medical Association has reversed its anti-vitamin stand and stated in the landmark article in 2002, JAMA review noted: “Most people do not consume an optimal amount of all vitamins by diet alone. Pending strong evidence of effectiveness from randomized trials, it appears prudent for all adults to take vitamin supplements.” – Dr Robert H Fletcher, MD, MSc

USANA Essentials supplies a complete range of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants necessary to support optimal cellular health and function. By taking one tablet each of Anti-Oxidant and Multi-Mineral three times daily to complement a healthy diet, we are on the way to vibrant health!

Keep 3 Highs Away with a Healthy Lifestyle

Share Button

usana healthy lifestyleFrom USANA Asia Pacific News Letter

People today sweat and toil to earn a living, making them no strangers to stress, inadequate sleep, lack of exercise, and unbalanced diets. Those who drink heavily and smoke are even more vulnerable to poor health. Many people, especially the young ones, are too used to this kind of lifestyle to be alert to its risks to their health. In recent years, increasing numbers of young people suffer from the “3 Highs”, which should be taken seriously not only by the elderly but also by the younger generations. A survey shows that almost half of people with high blood cholesterol are aged 20 to 45. Dining out on a regular basis without knowing how to make healthier food choices often makes these young people victims of these “3 Highs”.

Eat Well and Exercise Regularly The “3 Highs” refer to high blood sugar, high blood lipid and high blood pressure. They do not exhibit obvious symptoms, so people may not be aware of their suffering. Obese individuals are more prone to the “3 Highs” than those who maintain a normal weight. According to statistics, more than 40 percent of Australians are either overweight (a BMI 23 or above) or obese while 80 percent of people do not consume four to five servings of fruit and vegetables a day. Many studies prove the need to change poor lifestyle habits to prevent and improve the “3 Highs”:

  • Diets should mainly be mild and nutritional
  • Consume foods rich in antioxidants and soluble fibre to help maintain the flexibility of cardiovascular blood vessels, the balance of blood pressure, and lower cholesterol
  • Avoid foods that are high in cholesterol, such as animal fats and offals as well as processed and preserved foods
  • Consume foods rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids in moderation, like olive oil and nuts Besides diet control, it is also important to develop the habit of regular exercise.
  • Exercise helps control weight, lower blood lipids and blood pressure, keep blood glucose levels under control, and improve heart and lung functions. Choose exercises based on your individual physical condition.
  • Exercise at least three times a week and at least 30 minutes each time. Do it consistently and progressively.

Let’s look at which USANA Products can help.

Building a Strong Foundation for Health: the USANA Essentials™

usana essentials

Normal cellular metabolism, exposure to pollution and toxins, stress, and poor diet and lifestyle habits form free radicals which attack our cells, gradually chipping away at their integrity and resulting in an eventual decline in health. To maintain cellular health, we have to inhibit the activity of free radicals. Composed of Mega Antioxidant and Chelated Mineral, the USANA Essentials™ provide the nutrients you need every day. Mega Antioxidant contains a wide range of high-quality antioxidants and vitamins that are easily absorbed by body, such as vitamins B, C, D3, E, and beta carotene. They help defend against the oxidative stress caused by environmental pollution and natural aging, supporting the health of the heart, immune system, and brain. Chelated Mineral contains 12 necessary minerals and trace elements, including calcium, magnesium, iodine, zinc, and selenium, which help convert carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into energy. By taking both Mega Antioxidant and Chelated Mineral, you can achieve a maximum benefit for your health. They suppress the damage caused by free radicals to protect cell integrity. While defending against oxidative stress, they promote health and the normal functioning of the body.

Energizing the Cells: USANA CoQuinone™ 100

USANA CoQuinone 100

The energy that every cell needs to function is produced through a complex process in the mitochondria within the cell. Alpha lipoic acid is a potent antioxidant that plays a crucial role in producing cellular energy, while CoQ10 helps convert food into energy for cellular survival, keeping the cells in their best condition. USANA combines alpha lipoic acid and CoQ10 to manufacture a powerful antioxidant blend with a unique formulation: USANA CoQuinone™ 100. It is clinically proven to deliver more CoQ10 to the blood stream than competing products and provides ingredients vital for sound muscle function, and healthy nerve function. In addition to helping the body produce energy which is effectively transported to every muscular cell, it neutralizes the activity of free radicals and provides a high degree of antioxidant protection, preventing premature aging.

Supporting Brain Health: USANA BiOmega-3™

USANA Biomega

An intake of an appropriate balance of omega-3s and omega- 6s helps promote health, but surveys indicate that most of us do not obtain enough omega-3 fatty acids from our diets. USANA BiOmega-3™ is produced from cold-water, deep sea fish oil and contains a balanced, concentrated daily dose of two important omega-3 fatty acids: EPA and DHA. It is free of contaminants, pesticides, heavy metals, and carcinogens, which are eliminated through a double-molecular distillation process that ensures the highest possible purity. Apart from maintaining the normal transmission of brain signals, facilitating the function of serotonin, USANA BiOmega-3™ helps maintain good joint and bone health.

Team USANA’s Shara Gillow and her beloved USANA Products

Share Button

usana shara gillow

Article from USANA Australia Magazine 2014.

Following her father’s sporting tracks, Shara Gillow began cycling professionally in 2009. And, 2013 was an especially rewarding year for Shara – her super-fast cycling speed saw her crowned three-time Australian Time Trial Champion. Plus, she has represented Australia in the 2013 London Olympic Games. We caught up with Shara to talk about her past, present and future hopes plus why she chose USANA Products.

Cycling can be a pushing sport – what keeps you motivated?

“You need a lot of persistence and you have to be really really dedicated to be a professional athlete – whatever you choose. But for me, I guess I always wanted to go to the Olympic Games. It was always a really big dream for me. And, to be able to have represented Australia at the Olympics now, I am able re-focus and set new goals.”

What’s the most memorable point of your career?

It has to be being at the London Olympic Games in 2012 – a pretty amazing experience! My parents were there and my dad is a former Olympic cyclist as well, so him being present was pretty special. I just remember standing in the crowd and saying “Hey dad, now there are two Olympians in the family!”

USANA Supplements are part of your daily regime – were you taking any nutritionals before?

“Yes I was taking other vitamins. But, when I started taking USANA, I noticed a difference straight away. I have always been really big on nutrition and vitamins before I started cycling, and I always try to put the right food into my body. USANA is just an amazing product!”

What sort of difference have you noticed?

“Mostly recovery and well-being. As an athlete, I train so hard, and after riding over 100km, there are so many nutrients that get depleted from my body.  Athletes are always susceptible to getting sick or run down, so I really need something to give me a boost. It’s important to take the best multivitamin in the market that is safe for your body. We get drug tested all the time, so it needs to not have any banned substances. USANA gives me peace of mind”

Would you recommend USANA Products to other athletes or your average Joe?

“I would definitely recommend the USANA Essentials – I love them!” It’s something that everyone can use, and it really boosts energy levels whilst helping me a lot with stamina. Even in everyday life,  even if you’re not doing hours and hours of training, it is something that will help you.”

What was the atmosphere like at the Olympics?

“The atmosphere was amazing. The crowds were just phenomenal. There were thousands of people. When I did the individual time trials, the crowds were just banked up on each side and I couldn’t even hear myself think. It was just shouting and noise and cheering. The closing ceremony was spectacular. And watching performers like the Spice Girls and One Direction was pretty cool, too!”

What you are currently training for?

“I am working towards the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. After the Commonwealth Games this year, it’s only a couple of years and the Olympic Games will be here again. I’d love to win Gold for Australia one day. Right now, it’s all about preparation – time goes so fast, and even though people think it’s a long way away, it really sneaks up on you! You need to be prepared.

Nutrition is a big part of your life but if you could choose a fun dinner with anyone, who would it be?

“Well I’ve already met Eddy Merckx (who is considered to be the greatest pro-cyclist ever!). So, it would have to be the actor, Will Farrell. I think I would laugh all night. It would be great to share a Thai green curry or some steak with him!”

Thanks Shara for squeezing in some time to talk with us! We’re watching your amazing progress and supporting you every step – or cycle – on the way!

USANA HealthPak, Biomega, SoyaMax and Nutrimeal are recommended to athletes.

Seven USANA Star Supplements for men

Share Button

usana mens healthArticle extracted from USANA Australia Product focus 2014

Whether you want to build more lean muscle to supercharge your metabolism, or you just want to feel great and have as much energy as possible, what you eat counts. And, while there’s no doubt that every man is unique, men do share some particular health challenges. So, once the fundamentals are covered – healthy mixed diet, regular exercise, regular health checks, relaxation and sleep – think about your supplemental health.

Here are seven supplements – and their role in men’s health.

1. USANA Essentials

You definitely don’t need a multivitamin and or multi-mineral if you are eating a widely mixed diet that contains all the right proportions of nutrients. The trouble is, most of us don’t – at least
not all of the time, anyway. That’s where wide-ranging and potent products like Essentials (or HealthPak™ if you want the added benefits of an extra antioxidant boost plus calcium)
come in. Some of the nutrients they contain that relate to men’s health include:

B vitamins – which have a wide range of duties. As far as heart and blood vessel health is concerned, vitamins B6, B12 and folic acid help to process the amino acid, homocysteine. Low blood levels of homocysteine is believed to be beneficial to heart health.

Vitamin E – which is actually a group of protective nutrients, and each has a different role. All of them are needed for good health and studies suggest that vitamin E could have a protective
effect in cardiovascular health. Studies also suggest that vitamin E may protect muscles after exercise.

1. Go for natural vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol) rather than synthetic (dlalpha tocopherol), which is harder for your body to use. Essentials, HealthPak and E-Prime™ all contain natural forms of vitamin E, not the synthetic form that you can find in some supplements.

Chromium – if you are overweight, it may be especially important to ensure that you’re getting enough of this mineral. Chromium helps to keep insulin levels in check by improving the body’s sensitivity to it. However, the most important way to improve insulin sensitivity is to get to –
and stay within – a healthy weight range.

Studies suggest that chromium picolinate is the most effective supplemental form as it’s easier to absorb than other kinds. Do not take while on warfarin therapy without medical advice.
This product contains selenium, which is toxic in high doses. A daily dose of 150μg for adults of selenium from dietary supplements should not be exceeded.

2. USANA BiOmega™

Many studies have shown the benefits of long chain omega-3 fats, the kind that you find in oily fish, for brain and heart health. Omega-3s have a natural anti-inflammatory action whilst helping to reduce the stickiness of blood so that it can flow more freely. If you are taking blood thinners like warfarin, be sure to speak with your doctor before taking any kind of supplement, though. So how much is enough? The Australian Heart Foundation suggests that for generally healthy men, around 1,000mg a day is about right. If you have heart problems, you may
need 2,000 to 4,000mg but check with your doctor first. Take USANA BiOmega with meals to boost absorption and avoid any fishy aftertaste. The long chain omega-3 fats in this ethically sourced supplement are in therapeutic concentrations – 550mg of omega-3 EPA/DHA combined per capsule.

3. USANA Vitamin D

More and more research is showing the many benefits and the many reasons why people can be low on this fat-soluble vitamin. A staggering number of men – even in Australia and
New Zealand – are short of it despite the fact that the major source of vitamin D isn’t diet at all – it occurs when UV light in sunshine reacts with a cholesterol-like substance in the skin.
Low levels have been linked with a number of health problems including low immunity and depression. Vitamin D3 supplements as cholecalciferol provide the same form of vitamin D as we make in the skin and supplements are a good way to improve vitamin D status if more sun exposure is not practical (if you do too much indoors, if you have dark skin and for people who don’t want to go out or can’t do so).

USANA Vitamin D contains vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) 1000 IU/25 micrograms. Suggested dose: one tablet daily preferably with meals.

4.  USANA Probiotic

These are the bacteria that naturally live in your gut. Here, they process foods and play an important part in protecting your immune system. Try taking one stick pack of USANA Probiotic every other day to feed your internal bacteria and help your immune system. This has a preventative effect – the good bacteria can simply crowd out the bad ones and keep infection at bay. Probiotics also have a role in keeping you to stay regular helping you to feel good from the inside out!

According to scientists at London’s Royal Free hospital, a good probiotic needs to:

  • Reach the gut without being killed off by strong stomach acids along the way.
  • Be safe for human consumption.
  • Have clinically proven health benefits demonstrated by scientific trials.
  • Have their contents clearly defined Be clearly labelled.
  • Be shelf stable.

USANA Probiotic ticks all the boxes! USANA Probiotic uses patented strains Lactobacillus
rhamnosus LGG® and Bifidobacterium BB-12® in a unique 50/50 mixture. These two strains of probiotic bacteria have been clinically proven to promote a natural balance of beneficial micro flora in the gut.

 5. USANA Palmetto Plus™

This men’s health formula contains ingredients to protect men’s physiology. For example, it contains saw palmetto and two powerful antioxidants, lycopene and soy isoflavones.

Saw Palmetto – Native Americans traditionally used the berries of this palm tree both as food and as medicine and it was first listed in the United States Pharmacopeia as far back as 1906 for complaints associated with prostate health. According to one study published in the Journal of Urology, ‘Evidence suggests that saw palmetto may have a significant effect on urinary flow rates and symptom scores compared to placebo in men with lower urinary tract symptoms.’
Its effects are thought to be due to its reaction with testosterone; it appears to shrink the inner lining that puts pressure on the tubes that carry urine. Studies suggest that combining saw palmetto with isoflavones, antioxidants found in foods such as legumes and soy may help to improve its effectiveness. Plus, both of these plant pigments seem to help retain prostate health.

saw palmetto

Lycopene – the pigment that gives tomatoes their red colour is the most abundant carotenoid in the prostate. It helps to maintain the cell membrane and DNA from oxidation. Soy isoflavones – a group of phytochemicals found in soybeans; these have been shown to help maintain good health in a wide range of functions throughout the body.

6. USANA Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10 – or CoQ10 for short – is made by body cells. It keeps the tiny engines that fire cell functions burning and in this way, providing the energy that cells need to keep working to their best. Less CoQ10 is produced with age so if you want to revive those energy levels, it may be a good option. Taking blood cholesterol lowering medicines like statins reduces CoQ10 levels because it interferes with the production of this potent antioxidant at the cell level5.

The optimal intake is around 100mg daily say scientists, and this isn’t possible from foods alone. USANA CoQuinone® 100 contains 100mg of CoQ10 plus alpha lipoic acid which recycles CoQ10 and other antioxidants to prolong the benefits. Do not take while on warfarin therapy without medical advice.

7. USANA Procosamine®

If you’re feeling the odd ache and pain in your joints, consider USANA Procosamine. Adequate levels of glucosamine may help to rebuild lost cartilage. But unlike regular glucosamine products, Procosamine contains Meriva® curcumin a potent anti-inflammatory which is nearly 29 times more bioavailable as regular turmeric to supercharge this Indian spice’s already
super effective action. Vitamin supplements should not replace a balanced diet. Use only as directed. Always read the label. If symptoms persist see your healthcare practitioner.

We’ve always been proud of our athletic pedigree here in Australia and New Zealand, and we’re also super proud of the fact that so many elite athletes trust their nutritional health to USANA. So we are delighted to introduce eight of our local athletes who represented our region at the commonwealth games!

The games were held in Glasgow in July and saw over 70 countries compete in this epic event!

1. Kenneth To

Swim star, Kenneth, trained hard for Glasgow 2014, as well as training every morning and afternoon (8-9 sessions) plus two yoga sessions and one daily gym session, Kenneth works hard on his health.

“Nutrition-wise, I kept things very similar to past preparations, i.e. A balanced diet assisted by USANA nutritionals. I take my daily USANA Healthpak and Nutrimeal after every session, especially in the lead up to racing, and Rev3 Energy drink on my race days to psyche me up!

3. martin Knight

Squash champ Martin, says: “It feels amazing to be selected for my country once again. Squash is not an Olympic sport, so for me. the Commonwealth Games is the highlight of my career! And, to be part of a wider New Zealand team is fantastic. I felt very proud to be able to represent New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games.”

Martin’s training was very squash-specific with plenty of time on court, match play and game-based routines.

“Keeping healthy over this period is very important and I watched what I ate to make sure I filled up on plenty of carbohydrates for energy as well as staying on top of my fresh fruit and vegetables.” says Martin. “I took my USANA vitamins and listened to my body to make sure I didn’t get run down, too!”

3. David Bishop

Gymnast David says: “After the initial relief of qualifying for the games, I was so very happy to call my parents and family so happy and proud of me was definitely the greatest feeling!“

Before the games David has been heavy loading his body with lots of routines and strength conditioning. “At that point I was eating relatively healthily but if my body told me it really needed a treat such as chocolate and peanut butter I would give it what it wanted!” He says.

David packed his Proflavanol C100, USANA Essentials, Active Calcium Plus, CoQuinone 100 and BiOmega, as well as USANA Nutrimeal, All of these were essential to help me perform at my best!” He says.

4. Shara Gillow

Cyclist Shara describes being selected to compete for Australia as being “a real honour!”

To prepare, Shara had been racing in coutries like: Belgium, Holland, Italy and England and she has also been over to Scotland a few times to get to know the race course in Glasgow. “And I was mentally preparing too – this was just as important. But how did I do this? Well it’s a secret!” She says.

“My nutrition always plays a massive part in my racing and training, I think if you don’t get the best nutrition you can’t perform at your best!”

Shara packed her USANA Essentials (which she describe as a must) and her Active Calcium Plus.

Article from USANA Australia Product Focus Newsletter 2014.

There’s nothing new about the concept of eating for healthy, glowing skin. But more and more studies are revealing the exact mechanisms that foods, food components and nutrients interact to help to smooth and nourish skin for a glowing complexion. Apart from staying away from cigarettes and using sunscreen, your diet is a big influencer of your skin health. Want to eat yourself beautiful? Let’s start with the basics…

A healthy diet

It’s the cornerstone to good health and vital for the effective working of every cell in your body – including the function and feel of your skin. A healthy diet includes lots of antioxidant-rich veggies and fruits, fewer processed foods and drinks and alcohol, plenty of water, regular
exercise and rest. Plus, here are specific food components that contribute to glowing skin…

Omega-3s are a group of unsaturated oils needed for hundreds of body functions and the vast majority of us don’t get enough via diet alone. Unsaturated oils are better for your general health than saturated kinds (which tend to come from animal products and have been linked with heart-health problems). And, as far as your skin is concerned, omega-3s provide the plump – they help your skin look and feel hydrated by helping to reduce water loss thus fighting dryness. Omega-3s also boast a powerful anti-inflammatory action – which may be especially helpful if your skin is prone to acne-flares (one symptom of omega-3 fatty acid shortage); other symptoms include eczema, dandruff, dry and flaky skin and poor wound healing. Omega-3s also work as gatekeepers in cell membranes – allowing water and nutrients in but helping to keep toxins out. Your body uses and loses omega-3s daily so it’s important to consume
optimum quantities.

Find omega-3s in…Oily fish (smaller quantities in white fish, algae, walnuts, chia and flax seeds, soy beans and other legumes.

usana biomegaTry the potent and therapeutic strength USANA BiOmega – it contains fish oil from ethical sources and a whopping 550mg of marine sourced omega-3 EPA and DHA in every capsule.

Vitamin C

Also known as ascorbic acid, vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin – your body can’t store large quantities of it so you need to consume vitamin C containing foods regularly. When your skin has been damaged, its ability to heal itself partly depends on the nutrients your body can supply to aid the healing process. Vitamin C is an important wound healing nutrient which plays a key role in skin repair and health. This powerful yet delicate antioxidant nutrient helps to strengthen and produce collagen fibres, the matrix structure that holds your skin together and helps it stay firm. Vitamin C soaks up damaging free radicals thus helping to slow the visible signs of ageing – lines and wrinkles etc. In fact, one study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, showed that women who had a diet high in vitamin C foods had noticeably less dryness and fewer lines. As well as containing vitamin C, vegetables and fruits contain plant antioxidants that also help to mop up free radicals which can damage body cells including skin cells.

Fresh fruits and veggies (and lightly cooked frozen produce) especially citrus and berries are rich in vitamin C. Find it in USANA Essentials™, USANA HealthPak™, and USANA Proflavanol® C100 (which comes with the added skin health benefits of grape seed extract) and USANA Poly C™.

Vitamin E

Your skin is constantly exposed to damaging free radicals, which cause skin to look older and weathered. Getting enough vitamin E and other antioxidants can slow down the look of skin ageing. Vitamin E behaves a bit like a preservative helping the skin retain moisture. Working
alongside vitamin C, the duo guards against free radical attack via a potent boost of anti-ageing skin protection.

These protective plant compounds work to defend your body’s cells – including skin cells – against the damage of oxidative stress. These are packed into fruits and vegetables and, generally speaking, different coloured produce provides a different range of defending flavonoids (which is why eating a rainbow is a great way to get the widest possible nutritional benefit from your edibles!). Beta-carotene (the orange pigment in carrots, sweet potato
and mango etc.) is converted into vitamin A by your body and is a prime factor in keeping your skin soft. Components such as astaxanthin, lycopene and resveratrol fight free radial damage in the body – including the skin, too. Plus, antioxidants from grape seed extract have also been
used in a number of skin supplements. Plus, chocolate lovers rejoice – the flavenols in good quality chocolate may help boost skin hydration. But you only need a small piece…

Find flavonoids in…
Tomatoes and grapes, tea, good quality chocolate.

usana selenium

This mineral works alongside vitamin E to support the immune system and help fight infection which can affect the way you feel – and the way you look. Selenium is an antioxidant mineral that helps protect the skin from sun damage; it also helps the skin maintain firmness and elasticity.

usana zinc

Needed to make collagen, the foundation to your skin, zinc is also vital for skin healing and growth (it works in combination with vitamin C and is often taken together). Flaky skin
(including your scalp) could signal low levels of zinc. This mineral is also a component of the enzyme functions that the body needs to repair itself when skin is damaged. The zinc in USANA HealthPak™ and USANA Essentials™ is zinc ascorbate i.e. bound with vitamin C as the two work hand in hand.

10 Ways to Winter Wellness and USANA Products

Share Button

usana winter wellnessfrom USANA Australia Magazine 2014.

While Winter doesn’t bring the sub zero temperatures and icy winds of some seasons world-while, it does increase your chances of ill health. According to the UK’s NHS, you’re 80% more likely to get a cold in winters. So, what can you do to ensure your immune system is fighting fit this snuffle season?

OK, you probably already know that eating well, enjoying plenty of seasonal veggies and fruits, staying hydrate and going low GI is the way to go – whether its winter or not! But do you know about the kind of supplements that can enhance your health when it’s colder?

The right supplements can complement your best health intentions. Here we outline some key products – and the nutrients they contain – and why they may help protect your health this winter.

1. Vitamin A

Orangey and red-coloured produce contains vitamin A in the form of beta carotene which the body converts into vitamin A. This immunity-boosting antioxidants is vital for a healthy immune system, healthy skin and vision. And, although you’re not likely to be deficient in this fat-soluble vitamin, sub-clinical deficiency can leave your immune system challenged. Find it in red and yellow fruits and veggies and in fish and lean meat plus USANA Essentials or HealthPak which contains a range of potent bioavailable antioxidants.

2. Vitamin D

Vital for the absorption of calcium and phosphorous for healthy bones and teeth, the major sources of this fat-soluble vitamin is actually the action of sunlight on the skin. Find it in: margarine, egg yolks and oily fish plus in USANA Essentials™ or HealthPak™ and USANA Vitamin D™.

3. Vitamin C

Vitamin C

The classic immune system booster, studies show that taking vitamin C can reduce the duration and severity of colds. Vitamin C AKA asscorbic acid is needed for healthy collagen, teeth, gums and blood vessels. Cutting up and cooking veggies and fruits destroy this delicate antioxidant vitamin and it is lost from the body rapidly, too. So enjoy seasonal veggie and fruits daily  to keep your levels topped up. Symptoms of low levels of vitamin C include poor resistance to infection.

Find it in fresh, seasonal fruits and veggies. USANA Essentials™ contains vitamin C complex as do USANA Poly-C™, or Proflavanol C100 which ensures raised blood levels of vitamin C for longer-term protection.

 4. Iron

This mineral is a part of the pigment hemoglobin in red blood cells that transports oxygen to body cells. One of the symptoms of anemia (low blood iron concentration) is reduced resistance to infection. And, taking vitamin C with a meal helps your body to absorb more iron – from all foods that contain iron.

Find it in: lean meat, sardines, fortified breakfast cereals and green, leafy vegetables. The vitamin C in USANA Essentials™, HealthPak™, Poly C™ and Proflavanol C100™.

5. zinc

As well as being vital for healthy growth, development, night vision and the ability to taste and smell, you need a steady supply of zinc to keep your immune system strong (poor wound healing is one of the first signs of deficiency). Zinc is often taken with vitamin C to boost immune function.

Find it in: lean meat, oysters, eggs, seafood, tofu, black-eyed peas, peanuts and whole-grains plus in USANA Essentials™ or HealthPak™.

 6. Co-enzyme Q10

Called CoQ10 for short is a substance that’s found in almost every cell in your body. It’s located inside tiny organelles called mitochondria (these are a bit like your body’s batteries and they use oxygen to create energy in order to fuel vital processes). In other words, CoQ10 provides energy at the cell level. So, if you lack energy in the colder months, CoQ10 may help. USANA CoQuinone™ 30 or CoQuinone™ 100 contains alpha lipoic acid (alpha lipoic acid is also involved in mitochondrial energy metabolism and it recycles oxidized CoQ10). So, it helps to recharges your batteries and recycle other antioxidants, including vitamins E and C and glutathione) literally! Try CoQuinone 30 or CoQuinone 100.

 7. Milk Thistles

This member of the artichoke family contains silymarin, a powerful antioxidant mix. Like other members of the artichoke family, silymarin stimulates bile production reducing indigestion, nausea and bloating. Artichokes also contain inulin, a prebiotic which nourish protective bacteria in the large intestine helping the bacteria in the large intestine helping the bacteria to do their job – part of which is to boost the immune system.

Find it in artichokes, turmeric (which also contain silymarin), berries and dark grapes.

USANA HepaPlus™ contains mile thistle as well as a patented form of the potent anti-inflammatory, turmeric which has been used in Ayurveic medicine for thousands of years.

8. Ginkgo biloba

Do you have poor circulation in winter? The leaf of this ancient tree – is most often used to boost circulation. It contains powerful antioxidants to help boost blood flow. Try USANA Ginkgo-Ps™.

9. Skin Boosters

Skin may feel drier and need a little extra moisturizing and protection both from indoor heating and outdoor cold and wind.

Eat plenty of essential fatty acids (EFAs), particularly omega-3 (found in avocado and oily fish) and omega-6 (found in nuts, wholegrains and flaxseed oil) may help to keep skin hydrated and clarified. A deficiency in both of these may result in dry, inflamed skin, whiteheads and blackheads. Plus the anti-inflammatory action of omega-3s helps to clam irritated skin. It’s also important to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated – water and tea (especially green tea) are good choices.

10. Probiotics

Think they’re just for digestive health? Well more and more research is showing that probiotics have a positive effect on so many aspects of good health – and that includes immunity.

For example, probiotics, such as lactobacilli and bifidobacteria species can improve the body’s resistance to bacterial and viral infections.

Find probiotics in: fermented products like sauerkraut, yogurt and also in USANA Probiotic™.

USANA Essentials – synergy, the whole is greater

Share Button

Many years ago, scientists predicted a future when human can live on powder and drinks containing finite number of nutrients, just enough for human body to operate as a machine. As years passes, we realized that our human body, is much more complex than we think. The body needs around 55 different types of nutrients (USANA Essentials has 45 different types of essential nutrients) , of which are micro nutrients and macro nutrients. Micro nutrients contains vitamins, minerals and antioxidants while macro nutrients contains water, protein, carbohydrate, essential fat and fiber. These nutrients all work with each other to maintain, protect and repair our body. This is called “Synergy”.

usana essentials

By knowing the synergy work inside all nutrients, we could say that, there is no way to prevent or treat any diseases for the human body with only one type of nutrient. For example. Anemia is related to the deficiency of zinc,  magnesium, vitamin B6, B12 and folic acid. (Which can all be found in USANA Essentials or HealthPak)

In some situations, introducing a nutrient for our body can increase the deficiency of another nutrient. For example, over dosage of iron can suppress the absorption of zinc. Since Iron is an antagonist for zinc.

Known by many dietitians, zinc is an important element for fetal development, over dosage of iron will have negative impact for pregnant woman.

Working together is better than working separately

Many nutrients, in fact, does not work without their synergistic friend. Vitamin B6 will not be used by our body until it is reformed as pyridoxal-5-phosphate. This task is achieved by a special enzyme, which depends on the existence of magnesium and zinc. (Two key minerals in USANA Essentials or HealthPak) When our body lack of the two above mentioned minerals, supplying it with vitamin B6 is NOT going to help.

Nutritional therapy is all about synergy, unlike many western medicines which only provides only one type of chemicals.

Antioxidants work the same way inside our body. Vitamin C, vitamin E, Beta-carotene, glutathione, Coenzyme Q10, lipoic acid, and anthocyanidins (antioxidants in USANA Essentials or HealthPak) can all protect us from free radical attack. Surprisingly, when they work with each other as a team, the battling power increases 10 folds or more.

For example, a free radical from fast food, is eliminated by vitamin E, which will be recovered by vitamin C. Vitamin C then will be recycled by glutathione, which will be restored by anthocyanidins. Coenzyme Q10, beta-carotene, and lipoic acid also helping each other. This is the true power of synergy – The ultimate team work.

Free radicals, are the bad bugs inside our body. They are produced by rubbish food, stress, pollution from the air and the contaminated water we drink. It is the sparks for our body, (The body is like a mattress.) Antioxidant network is the fences, protecting our body free from the sparks so the mattress will not be burned with little holes everywhere. The better the synergy, the stronger the fences. That’s why we often recommend people not to take one of few types of nutrients, but focus on the completeness of vital nutrients supplementation.

The idea of synergy is a cornerstone of the optimum nutrition approach. You may achieve better results by eating the right foods and taking the right combination of nutrients like the USANA Essentials or HealthPak, which is the best multivitamins with complete essential nutrients.
