However, supplementation of pre-formed vitamin A at taken chronically at very high doses may lead to cumulative toxic overdose . Antioxidant Support Some studies have shown that increased consumption of vitamin B3 (5.2mg – 6.2mg daily), along with antioxidant nutrients are associated with decreased risk of mouth cancer, throat cancer and esophageal cancers. Diminished folate status is found to be associated with cancers of the cervix, colon and rectum, lung, esophagus, brain, pancreas and breast. The dire consequence of low folate intake is further aggravated with high alcohol intake which is associated with increased incidence of colorectal cancer. On the other hand, studies have shown that premenopausal women with genetic background of breast cancer who consumed an average of 205mg vitamin C daily experienced 63% lower risk of breast cancer than those who consumed an average of 70mg/ day. Findings from another study also show that optimal selenium status was associated with a significant 54% lower risk of lung cancer.

 

The Bottom Line

Broad scientific evidence supports a need to supplement with a variety of nutrients to support metabolic health, and eye health as well as to aid in fighting chronic diseases such as cancer through synergistic antioxidant support. Team USANA’s Shara Gillow and her beloved USANA Products

Following her father’s sporting tracks, Shara Gillow began cycling professionally in 2009. And, 2013 was an especially rewarding year for Shara – her super-fast cycling speed saw her crowned three-time Australian Time Trial Champion. Plus, she has represented Australia in the 2013 London Olympic Games. We caught up with Shara to talk about her past, present and future hopes plus why she chose USANA Products.

Cycling can be a pushing sport – what keeps you motivated?

“You need a lot of persistence and you have to be really really dedicated to be a professional athlete – whatever you choose. But for me, I guess I always wanted to go to the Olympic Games. It was always a really big dream for me. And, to be able to have represented Australia at the Olympics now, I am able re-focus and set new goals.”

What’s the most memorable point of your career?

It has to be being at the London Olympic Games in 2012 – a pretty amazing experience! My parents were there and my dad is a former Olympic cyclist as well, so him being present was pretty special. I just remember standing in the crowd and saying “Hey dad, now there are two Olympians in the family!”

“Yes I was taking other vitamins. But, when I started taking USANA, I noticed a difference straight away. I have always been really big on nutrition and vitamins before I started cycling, and I always try to put the right food into my body. USANA is just an amazing product!”

“Mostly recovery and well-being. The closing ceremony was spectacular. And watching performers like the Spice Girls and One Direction was pretty cool, too!”

What you are currently training for?

“I am working towards the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. After the Commonwealth Games this year, it’s only a couple of years and the Olympic Games will be here again. I’d love to win Gold for Australia one day. Right now, it’s all about preparation – time goes so fast, and even though people think it’s a long way away, it really sneaks up on you! You need to be prepared.

Nutrition is a big part of your life but if you could choose a fun dinner with anyone, who would it be?

“Well I’ve already met Eddy Merckx (who is considered to be the greatest pro-cyclist ever!). So, it would have to be the actor, Will Farrell. I think I would laugh all night. It would be great to share a Thai green curry or some steak with him!”

Seven USANA Star Supplements for men

Whether you want to build more lean muscle to supercharge your metabolism, or you just want to feel great and have as much energy as possible, what you eat counts. And, while there’s no doubt that every man is unique, men do share some particular health challenges. So, once the fundamentals are covered – healthy mixed diet, regular exercise, regular health checks, relaxation and sleep – think about your supplemental health.

Here are seven supplements – and their role in men’s health.

1. USANA Essentials

You definitely don’t need a multivitamin and or multi-mineral if you are eating a widely mixed diet that contains all the right proportions of nutrients. The trouble is, most of us don’t – at least
not all of the time, anyway. That’s where wide-ranging and potent products like Essentials (or HealthPak™ if you want the added benefits of an extra antioxidant boost plus calcium)
come in. Some of the nutrients they contain that relate to men’s health include:

B vitamins – which have a wide range of duties. As far as heart and blood vessel health is concerned, vitamins B6, B12 and folic acid help to process the amino acid, homocysteine. Low blood levels of homocysteine is believed to be beneficial to heart health.

Vitamin E – which is actually a group of protective nutrients, and each has a different role. All of them are needed for good health and studies suggest that vitamin E could have a protective
effect in cardiovascular health. Studies also suggest that vitamin E may protect muscles after exercise.

1. Go for natural vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol) rather than synthetic (dlalpha tocopherol), which is harder for your body to use. Essentials, HealthPak and E-Prime™ all contain natural forms of vitamin E, not the synthetic form that you can find in some supplements.

Chromium – if you are overweight, it may be especially important to ensure that you’re getting enough of this mineral. Chromium helps to keep insulin levels in check by improving the body’s sensitivity to it. However, the most important way to improve insulin sensitivity is to get to –
and stay within – a healthy weight range.

Studies suggest that chromium picolinate is the most effective supplemental form as it’s easier to absorb than other kinds. Do not take while on warfarin therapy without medical advice.
This product contains selenium, which is toxic in high doses. A daily dose of 150μg for adults of selenium from dietary supplements should not be exceeded.

2. USANA BiOmega™

Many studies have shown the benefits of long chain omega-3 fats, the kind that you find in oily fish, for brain and heart health. Omega-3s have a natural anti-inflammatory action whilst helping to reduce the stickiness of blood so that it can flow more freely. If you are taking blood thinners like warfarin, be sure to speak with your doctor before taking any kind of supplement, though. So how much is enough? The Australian Heart Foundation suggests that for generally healthy men, around 1,000mg a day is about right. If you have heart problems, you may
need 2,000 to 4,000mg but check with your doctor first. Take USANA BiOmega with meals to boost absorption and avoid any fishy aftertaste. The long chain omega-3 fats in this ethically sourced supplement are in therapeutic concentrations – 550mg of omega-3 EPA/DHA combined per capsule.

3. USANA Vitamin D

Low levels have been linked with a number of health problems including low immunity and depression. Vitamin D3 supplements as cholecalciferol provide the same form of vitamin D as we make in the skin and supplements are a good way to improve vitamin D status if more sun exposure is not practical (if you do too much indoors, if you have dark skin and for people who don’t want to go out or can’t do so).

Saw Palmetto – Native Americans traditionally used the berries of this palm tree both as food and as medicine and it was first listed in the United States Pharmacopeia as far back as 1906 for complaints associated with prostate health. According to one study published in the Journal of Urology, ‘Evidence suggests that saw palmetto may have a significant effect on urinary flow rates and symptom scores compared to placebo in men with lower urinary tract symptoms.’
Its effects are thought to be due to its reaction with testosterone; it appears to shrink the inner lining that puts pressure on the tubes that carry urine. Studies suggest that combining saw palmetto with isoflavones, antioxidants found in foods such as legumes and soy may help to improve its effectiveness. Plus, both of these plant pigments seem to help retain prostate health.

Lycopene – the pigment that gives tomatoes their red colour is the most abundant carotenoid in the prostate. It helps to maintain the cell membrane and DNA from oxidation. Soy isoflavones – a group of phytochemicals found in soybeans; these have been shown to help maintain good health in a wide range of functions throughout the body.

6. USANA Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10 – or CoQ10 for short – is made by body cells. It keeps the tiny engines that fire cell functions burning and in this way, providing the energy that cells need to keep working to their best. Our Great Eight USANA Sponsored Athletes at the Glasgow Games

We’ve always been proud of our athletic pedigree here in Australia and New Zealand, and we’re also super proud of the fact that so many elite athletes trust their nutritional health to USANA. So we are delighted to introduce eight of our local athletes who represented our region at the commonwealth games!

The games were held in Glasgow in July and saw over 70 countries compete in this epic event!

1. Kenneth To

Swim star, Kenneth, trained hard for Glasgow 2014, as well as training every morning and afternoon (8-9 sessions) plus two yoga sessions and one daily gym session, Kenneth works hard on his health.

Squash champ Martin, says: “It feels amazing to be selected for my country once again. Squash is not an Olympic sport, so for me. the Commonwealth Games is the highlight of my career! And, to be part of a wider New Zealand team is fantastic. I felt very proud to be able to represent New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games.”

Martin’s training was very squash-specific with plenty of time on court, match play and game-based routines.

5. David Mckeon

Swim champ David qualified at the Australia championships by winning the 400 metre freestyle and coming 3rd at the 200 metre freestyle races. He described representing Australia a being a great honour. He geared up for Glasgow by training 10 two-hour pool sessions every week.

“I had been training hard in the run-up to the competition.” says David. “And concentrating hard on myself by getting the most out of my training –  I wanted to be the best that I could be.” He says.

6. Gilllies Kaka

After playing for the Hawkes Bay Magpies, World Series Dream Team and winning the Rugby Sevens World Cup Player of the Tournament (2013), Gillies was selected for the Rugby Sevens team to represent New Zealand in the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The big focus for Gillie was enhancing his training abilities and recovery time, while increasing results. Gillies is also one of our newest Team USANA Athletes and we’re excited to have him on board! Next on the radar for this promising young player is the Olympic Games in Rio!

7. Zhao Yue (Ricky)

Competitive shooter, Ricky is another new face to our Team USANA Athletes. The top New Zealand shooting star is the only New Zealander to qualify for the shooting category. Ricky has won multiple Gold medals including at the 2012 Hamilton Open, the 2013 Northland ISSF Open, and at the NZ ISSF Championships. Plus he took Gold at the 2014 Auckland Anniversary competition. Ricky’s next big goal after the Commonwealth Games, is to be selected to compete at t he 206 Olympics!

8. Leroy Hindley

Boxer Leroy is currectly ranked #1 64kg boxer in New Zealand, and he competed at the Commonwealth Games. The young athlete has competed in many competitions including the 2014 Sting Cup in Melbourne, the 2014 Gee Bee International Tourment in Finland where he won Bronze and the 2014 Belgrade Winners Tournament where he also walked away with a Bronze medal. We’re very proud to have him on board Team USANA!

Vitamin C

Also known as ascorbic acid, vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin – your body can’t store large quantities of it so you need to consume vitamin C containing foods regularly. When your skin has been damaged, its ability to heal itself partly depends on the nutrients your body can supply to aid the healing process. Vitamin C is an important wound healing nutrient which plays a key role in skin repair and health. Vitamin E

USANA Essentials – synergy, the whole is greater

Many years ago, scientists predicted a future when human can live on powder and drinks containing finite number of nutrients, just enough for human body to operate as a machine. As years passes, we realized that our human body, is much more complex than we think. The body needs around 55 different types of nutrients (USANA Essentials has 45 different types of essential nutrients) , of which are micro nutrients and macro nutrients. Micro nutrients contains vitamins, minerals and antioxidants while macro nutrients contains water, protein, carbohydrate, essential fat and fiber.
